2022 Field trip to Pohang

PSPS students went on a field trip to Pohang on October 21, 2022. They visited the Pohang Erosion Control Memorial Park. It opened on November 7, 2007, to celebrate Korea's 100th anniversary of the erosion control project. The erosion control project means constructing works to prevent natural disasters by planting trees in the mountains or raising river banks. Korea’s forest development projects show one of the most successful aspects of the Saemaul Undong, carried out by the government and local residents. The video and the construction site model showed students how to implement the erosion control project.

2022 Saemaul Foundation's 10 Anniversary Event

The 10th anniversary of the Saemaul Foundation was celebrated in Gumi on October 12, and PSPS students participated in the commemorative event. They had time to reflect on the growth and fruition of the past decade. They shared the vision of a new decade through a signboard unveiling ceremony, global congratulatory messages, and a vision declaration ceremony. After the celebration, students learned about the Saemaul Undong by visiting the Saemaul Undong Theme Park.

2022 COMMENCEMENT

Park Chung Hee School of Policy and Saemaul (PSPS) held a graduation ceremony for the PSPS Class of 2022 on 22 August 2022 at Sapphire Hall, Chunma Art Center: the first in-person commencement in three years, as the previous two ceremonies were held virtually because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Yeungnam University President Choi Oe-Chool and PSPS Dean YI Huiuk attended to congratulate students on their graduation. At PSPS, 42 students from 19 countries earned their master's degrees. President Choi said in his congratulatory remarks, “The knowledge and capabilities honed at PSPS will lead regional development and innovation in your home country and become a driving force for contributing to human society. Today's graduation ceremony will be a new starting point for the unknown world.” Also, “I hope you will have the courage and wisdom to initiate the development of your region and country through the knowledge you have learned here. Furthermore, I hope you all become proud alumni who will lead the prosperity of the global community.” In his congratulatory speech, Dean Yi hoped the graduates would become true leaders who could contribute to their neighbors and society. He noted, “Be persistent in pursuing what you want to do and what you need to do” to accomplish a task. Mohamed Serray Jalloh, who gave the valedictory speech, expressed his gratitude to the PSPS faculty and staff and stated, “Be the Saemaul warriors; we have been trained to equally uphold the Saemaul core values: Diligence, Self-help, and Cooperation, plus the Saemaul global values: Sharing, Service, and Creativity”; “Believe in the Can-Do Spirit.”

MOU among PSPS, Cheong-do Rotary Club, and Gyeongsan Queen’s Club

PSPS, Cheong-do Rotary Club, Rotary International District 3700, and Gyeongsan Queen’s Rotary Club, also belonging to District 3700, have signed an MOU to promote the “Saemaul Globalization Professional Human Resources Training Project. Dean of PSPS Yi, Chairperson of Cheong-do Rotary Club Kim Byung-Soo, and Chairperson of Gyeongsan Queens Club Kim Eun-Joo met at Sapphire Hall of Chunma Arts Center on August 17, 2022. They agreed to bring together the capabilities of the three organizations to establish a cooperative relationship and contribute to regional development, poverty eradication, and shared prosperity through Saemaul Undong. Under the agreement, two Rotary clubs will provide 27 million won scholarships for PSPS students who will enroll in 2023. It is expected that students who have acquired academic knowledge and international development know-how of the Saemaul Undong through the "Saemaeul Globalization Specialist Training Project" implemented by the MOU will have synergistic effects if they pursue significant projects such as environmental preservation, education support, and clean water supply.

[PSPS Distinguished Lecture Series] Special Lecture by Hyoung-Joon Lim, Head of WFP Guinea Office

On July 22, 2022, Hyoung-Joon Lim, Head of the WFP Guinea office, gave a special lecture to PSPS students at Cheonma Art Center at Yeungnam University. He lectured on the issues such as the role of the WFP and global hunger. He explained that in 2015, the United Nations adopted 17 Sustainable Development Goals to improve people's lives by 2030, the second of which was the achievement of Zero Hunger. In this regard, the WFP's priorities are to end hunger, achieve food security, and promote sustainable agriculture.” PSPS students asked many questions about food problems in their home countries. Director Lim discussed these questions with the students and explored possible solutions together.

[PSPS Distinguished Lecture Series] Special Lecture by Dr. Keon-Hyung Lee, Florida State University

On 21 July 2022, Professor Lee Keon-Hyung of Florida State University gave a special lecture titled “Impact of COVID-19 on Developing Countries: From a Health Care System Perspective” to PSPS students at Cheonma Art Center at Yeungnam University. Professor Lee gave a lecture on the trend analysis of the global Covid 19 outbreak and the medical policies applicable in emerging countries. He also pointed out the problems of hospital beds and shortages of medical staff in emerging countries and discussed with PSPS students how to solve these problems when they return to their home countries.

2022 Saemaul International Development Performance and Admission Briefing

On 29 June 2022, PSPS hosted the 'PSPS Saemaul International Development Achievement Sharing and Admission Briefing' at the Korea Press Center in Seoul. About 30 diplomats from 21 countries, including ambassadors from eight countries, showed keen interest in nurturing talents for Saemaul International Development. From Yeungnam University, President Choi Oe-Chool, Dean of PSPS Yi Huiuk, IIDC Director Kim Ki-Su, and several other professors attended. The event was organized by PSPS, which celebrated its 11th anniversary, to share the achievements of nurturing talent and Saemaul international development projects and introduce the PSPS master’s degree programs to diplomatic envoys. The diplomats exchanged questions and answers with PSPS students who attended the event during the Briefing Q&A session and throughout the lunch break. Zambian Ambassador to Korea Wilbur Shimusa said, “For the development of Zambia through the Saemaul Undong, the role of experts and leaders in the field of Saemaul International Development is more important than anything else. In the future, the Zambian embassy in Korea will actively recommend PSPS to talented young people in Zambia.” Choi Oe-Chool, President of Yeungnam University, said, “The United Nations World Food Program (WFP) has been promoting the Saemaul Zero Hunger Communities project to solve the problem of absolute poverty since 2011. As seen in this case, Saemaul is a brand representing Korea's education and culture.” He also said, "I will contribute to overcoming poverty in the international community and common prosperity in the global community by sharing Korea's development experience and Saemaul Undong’s know-how with the world.“ PSPS Dean Yi said, "A consensus has been formed with foreign diplomats, including ambassadors, to foster talents in the field of Saemaul international development.”

Savane Khadija from Guinea, 71st country to join PSPS, elected as the student council president

On 29 April, the students voted for the student council president. Savane Khadija from the Republic of Guinea, the 71st country to send students to PSPS, was elected president this year. Savane Khadija has already shown leadership as president by planning and implementing the operation of festival booths. On 2 June, PSPS celebrated the 71st country, the Republic of Guinea. In an interview, Kadijah said, “I am honored to be the first Guinea student and president of the student council in 2022. PSPS is home to hope for a prosperous world. We aim to cultivate a spirit of sharing to find solutions to community problems.”

2022 Special Lecture by YU's president CHOI-OE-CHOOL

The Class of 2022 students attended a special lecture by President Choi on 27 May 2022. The lecture for the first-semester students was entitled “Towards a Safer and Happier World, Sharing Korea’s Saemaul Undong.” In the lecture, the president explained how Korea, which received help from all over the world in the 1970s, overcame poverty through the Saemaul Undong. He then asked the students to obtain a good Saemaul education in PSPS and become Saemaul leaders who can lead their country's development after returning home. The students who attended the lecture each received a Saemaul Ring Tie. They also had an opportunity to strengthen the spirit of the Saemaul by singing the Saemaul songs together.

2022 YU Festival

During the festival to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the university, the PSPS students ran a booth on 19 and 20 May, which was organized by the newly formed student council. The booth distributed free desserts, promoting 18 countries the students are from. And they prepared various games to build friendships with Korean students. The highlight of the booth was a fashion show which introduced the national costumes of these countries while the traditional music of each country was played.
