YU got the honor of winning an award in “Project Effectiveness Category” for cultivation of future leaders of developing countries based on Saemaul Undong, Korean experiences in development, sustainability development education, and leadership training, etc. and for endeavors to overcome global poverty and construct the foundation for self-reliant economy, through Park Chung-hee Graduate School of Saemaul. President CHOI Oe-chool developed and established Saemaul Undong as an independent academic discipline, built a theoretical foundation for establishment of “Saemaul Studies,” and tried to add the values of “sharing, service, and creation” to the basic spirit of Saemaul Undong, “diligence, self-help, and cooperation to share and spread Saemaul Spirit 2.0.In the respect that education is the foundation of change and development to lead to sustainable development in developing countries and that education ODA is the major axis to form the center of international development cooperation, we led the establishment of Park Chung-hee Graduate School of Saemaul in 2011 and developed it into an unrivaled specialized institution for training talents of developing countries. YU helps development of export markets for domestic enterprises by playing the role of an institution for government's education ODA and by helping export markets for domestic enterprises and built a differentiated Korean-style education ODA system based on our know-how on Saemaul Undong and Korean experiences in development and based on researches on Saemaul Studies and teaching capabilities. <YU won the “Project Effectiveness Category” in “10th CSV·ESG Porter Awards’. (President CHOI Oe-chool of YU)> Since the opening of Park Chung-hee Graduate School of Saemaul, over 860 people from 73 countries around the world have enrolled and studied master's programs and, if short-term training on Saemaul Undong is included, over 4,000 foreign government officials and experts from over 80 countries shared their Saemaul experiences through training and education and play important roles in the field.Based on this human network, they serve as the bridges for local enterprises to discover overseas markets and for public diplomacy. The government is expanding ODA scale so that Korea, which has joined the ranks of advanced countries, may fulfill its obligation to contribute to the international community and YU is responding to the government's policy to expand ODA projects and is actively transferring Saemaul to developing countries.Numerous developing countries, including Philippines, Cambodia, and Uzbekistan, hope to share and get Saemaul Studies of YU, and recently, in addition to Saemaul International Development, requested academic fields are being expanded to computers, information communications, and water resources, etc. It is also attracting international attention that contributions are made in cultivation of the talents of developing countries and establishment of policies for national development to lead expansion of international exchanges of policies beyond academic exchanges.Last August, the representative example is that President CHOI Oe-chool became the first foreigner to be awarded an honorary doctorate in education from Western University through the approval of the Cambodian government in recognition of his role as an advisor for Cambodia's national development and his contribution to the establishment and support of Western University's Department of Saemaul Economic Development. Industry Perspective University Evaluation has been done since 2008 to expand communication between industry and universities, to cultivate human resources that meet industry demands, and to improve university curriculum and departments are directly evaluated by industry personnel and talent development staff from related organizations. This year, the evaluation fields increased from 4 to 5 fields (▲Environment ▲Energy ▲Shipbuilding and Offshore ▲Autonomous Vehicles ▲Intelligent Robots) and 33 departments of 22 universities were evaluated in three evaluation areas including industry-based curriculum design, operation, and operational performance.The universities that received the best evaluations were jointly awarded certification plaques in the names of the Ministry of Education, the Five Economic Organizations, and the Accreditation Board of Engineering Education of Korea. These plaques were presented to each department during today's award ceremony. President CHOI Oe-chool said, “YU got good evaluations in the areas of education, research, and social contribution in various world university evaluations this year. Recognition for contribution in development of academic publishing by publishing various books as a planning editor for 34 years As a planning editor of YU Press Division, published over 600 types of academic and liberal arts books [December 06, 2023] <Director LEE Jong-baek of YU Press and Publication Center won the grand prize in Korea Publishing Editor Award> Director LEE Jong-baek of YU Press and Publication Center won grand prize in 2nd Korea Publishing Editor Award on November 23. Korea Publishing Editor Award was established and has been given by Korean Publishing Foundation starting in 2022 to highly evaluate the contributions in editorial planners who are actually leading the publishing culture and at the same time to inspire pride in publishing editors. Director LEE Jong-baek is the planning editor of YU Publishing Division, has published over 600 types of academic books and liberal arts books in the fields of humanities, society, nature, and the arts for 34 years, has been leading publishing and editing books related to Korean studies and humanities and excellent writings in each field, and was recognized for his contribution in development of academic publishing.Representative projects include <History of Korean Cultural Thought> (4 volumes), <Compendium of Korea, China, and Japan> (6 volumes), and the complete collection of <Toegye Poetry Interpretation>, which interprets all 2,000 poems written by Toegye LEE Hwang in Korean ( 9 volumes), <Translation of Zhuxi Poetry> complete works (5 volumes), <Humanities Promotion Series> (33 volumes), <National Culture Research Series and Data Series> (30 volumes), and <Regional Culture Series>. Director LEE sets an example by actively working to cultivate publishing professionals through education participating in editing and production for local students wishing to enter publishing industry, and creative content contests support of publication for young people in their 20s and 30s.In addition, he has been making contributions in improvement of reading culture and in expansion of readers by providing reading programs, book design exhibitions, and special lectures in the region and has been actively making actions as a planning editor by presenting subjects as a Korean representative in international seminars in research activities and by promoting Korean history and culture in foreign countries through Korea-Japan exchanges of books and publication of local cultural contents in foreign languages. At the “12th International Digital Fashion Contest” hosted by The Society of Fashion & Textile Industry and sponsored by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, LEE Guk-bin (4th year) from YU Department of Clothing and Fashion won the Grand Prize with the theme of “Nike-Like Digicore 23” and received Award of the Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy. In the morning of the 11th, Chairman OH Jun of LEE Chan-won's Mom Fan Club and the members from all over the country visited YU and delivered KRW 10 million of scholarship money, asking for it to be used for students. Chairman OH Joon said, “It has already been four years since the mom fan club first came together to give a meaningful gift ahead of LEE Chan-won’s birthday.The good influence started from singer LEE Chan-won was transmitted to his fans all over the country and we gathered here. Since the establishment, YU Law School (Director LEE Dong-hyung) has consistently produced prosecutors since its first class of graduates and has produced a total of 24 prosecutors to date. Seven persons consisting of PARK Min-jin (26), PARK Woo-seong (35), LEE Su-ji (28), LEE Yeon-ju (28), LEE Jae-han (35), Jang Myeong-su (31), and CHOI Yi-seul (28) to graduate in February next year passed the selection test for new prosecutors to be employed next year. PARK Woo-seong (35), who attended a congratulatory meeting for those who passed the new prosecutor employment exam held in the president's reception room in the morning of the 10th, said, "I applied to YU Law School with the dream of becoming a prosecutor and was accepted, and with the help of the school and professors, I could achieve my dream.I will become a prosecutor who upholds the principles based on what I learned at my alma mater.” Also, LEE Yeon-ju (28) said “I chose YU Law School on the recommendation of my parents, who were aware of its reputation.YU may be the only law school where professors personally examine every detail, one by one. Chunma Employment Alumni Welcome Ceremony was held by Seoul Alumni Association (Chairman KIM Seok-hoe). The event was first held in 2012 and the 10th event was held this year.It is rare to hold an alumni event to congratulate and encourage seniors starting social life by seniors graduated tens of years ago. The event was fulfilled with more than 250 YU alumni including more than 80 alumni employed recently in metropolitan area including Seoul.They greeted each other and gave advice and encouragement about social life. In the event, Chairman KIM Seok-hoe (Architecture ’75, CEO of Borim Construction Co., Ltd.), Chairman of Bucheon LEE Si-won (Commerce ’63), former Minister JEON Jae-hee of Health and Welfare (Administration ’68), National Assembly member Joo Ho-young (Law ’78), National Assembly member KIM Seung-soo (Administrative ’83), and other YU persons in politics, relations, business, law, and culture came forward to meet them despite their busy schedules. Chairman KIM Seok-hoe of YU Seoul Alumni Association said in his welcome message, “Today’s place is for encouragement of seniors starting their first steps in the society and harmonization between seniors and juniors. I hope we can become mentors and mentees and spend time communicating together. I hope that our juniors who are just starting their social lives will use this opportunity to feel proud as Chunma people and become leaders who lead the Republic of Korea.” KIM Yong-hee (Economics and Finance ’17), who expressed gratitude on behalf of employed alumni, said, “As a beginner in society, coming here and seeing prominent seniors made me feel reassured, and I am proud to be YU alumni. I am grateful to the seniors who provided this opportunity. I will pursue bigger dreams by following in the footsteps of seniors who are active in all walks of life.When I told my colleagues at companies around me that hundreds of people would gather to welcome alumni who were employed in the metropolitan area, they were all surprised and envious. My juniors will also do their best to ensure that the tradition of the Chunma Employment Alumni Welcome Meeting continues.” Chairman of Bucheon LEE Si-won (Commerce ’63) made a congratulatory message saying, “We are all here because of our alma mater.YU may be the only university that holds an alumni event where numerous seniors and juniors gather to celebrate and encourage their juniors’ employment. I hope that today’s event will be a good opportunity for seniors and juniors to cooperate and coexist, and I am proud as an alumnus of YU. I hope you will always do your best in your position with a positive attitude.” President CHOI Oe-chool and Director PARK Jong-guk of External Cooperation Division also attended the event. President CHOI Oe-chool said, “I congratulate the employed alumni who found employment during difficult times. I hope you to use your capabilities to the fullest in your current position. I feel once again that the remarkable development and achievements of Yeungnam University today were possible thanks to the dedication and efforts of our alumni.With the support of our alma mater and our seniors, we hope that our juniors will become talented people who contribute not only to the development of Korea but also to human society, and we will do our best to support students at our alma mater to nurture outstanding talents. We will continue the tradition of a prestigious private school by making efforts to correct wrong information on Yeongnam School Corporation (YU).” Meanwhile, at the event, a mentor appreciation plaque presentation ceremony was held, where appreciation plaques were handed over to LEE Jae-rim, CEO of Borim Global Co., Ltd. (Architecture ’75) and Chairman KIM Byeong-no of Story Tour (Management ’81), who have always been a strong support for their juniors, and an active trot singer LEE Chan-won (Economics and Finance 15) also visited the event to cheer on the alumni who have started their social life.
